In the previous chapter, we created countries, cities, districts, and landmarks. Now it’s time to give the city even more personality. In this section, I’ll demonstrate how to use AI to detail a city’s culture by creating local events, festivals, customs, traditions, restaurants, food, and religious sites. Our first prompt contains a lot of the text we saved from our various summaries. Here it is. If you’re interested in the meat of the prompt, skip to the final paragraph.
Lira is a thriving, peaceful planet twice the size of Earth, with a single moon, Veil. It’s part of the Laniakea Supercluster and forms the Amity Ring with nearby habitable planets Zyre, Hela, and Tora, fostering trade and cultural exchanges.
Yrinthi, Vesperians, Talcorians, Glireans, Oraquill, Nevith, Humans, and Sylphine are the eight most common races coexisting on Lira, in no particular order.
Humans, although originating from Earth, adapt and flourish on Lira, with vocations focused on ecological and planetary sciences.
Yrinthi, the reflective-scaled, reptilian beings from Yrinx, have become scholars and historians, emphasizing communal learning within their culture.
Vesperians are bioluminescent and value education and historical stewardship, making them fitting educators and librarians on Lira.
Talcorians, with their diverse skin tones and stout build, excel in architecture and stonemasonry, stemming from their Talcor heritage of craftsmanship and a culture deep-rooted in familial and historical importance.
Glireans, the colorful, fur-covered species from Glirea, contribute to Lira’s society as communicators and entertainers, with a societal penchant for humor and communal storytelling.
Oraquill, insectoid academics from Ora, are recognized for their collective intelligence and contribution to Lira’s scientific community, embodying the pursuit of collective progress.
Nevith, graceful and feline, are from Nevia and specialize in roles that capitalize on their stealth and affinity for the natural world, like environmental surveillance and espionage.
Sylphine, from Sylpha, with their delicate wings and connection to the environment, serve as healers and musicians, fostering harmony and environmental care on Lira.
Lira is divided into several culturally and politically different countries, each with their own governing bodies.
One such country is Ilserine, which lies in the heartland of the continent of Sion, under the rule of a technocratic oligarchy led by the most skilled and knowledgeable citizens. Ilserine is renowned for its innovative approaches to science and philosophy, with the Sahiri Desert’s vast expanse providing both a clime for contemplation and a testing ground for technological advancements. Its festivals are a blend of intellectual symposiums and traditional storytelling, reflecting its people’s value for both history and progress.
Elion is the capital and largest city in Ilserine. It is situated on the banks of the Serene River. The city is a hub for politics and education, known for its revered University of Sion and bustling river trade. Culturally, Elion is a melting pot where the traditional festival of Lights converges with modern-day tech fairs.
Elion experiences a mild, temperate climate with distinct seasons, conducive to its vibrant education and political activities. The city enjoys warm summers and cool winters, with occasional rain that sustains its river ecosystem and lush urban gardens.
Elion is predominantly inhabited by Humans and Yrinthi, with significant minorities of Sylphine and Vesperians intermingled throughout its diverse neighborhoods. The University of Sion boasts a substantial number of Glireans and Oraquill among its academic staff.
The Liran calendar, “Valax,” features ten “Briska” (months), each with 45 “Solons” (days), with cultural significance ascribed to each. The names of the days of the week are “Nayada,” “Beryl,” “Cyane,” “Dravite,” “Elore,” and “Feyara,” symbolizing values such as reflection, communication, commerce, craftsmanship, artistry, and celebration. The Briska are named with a natural and mythological emphasis on life’s cycle, like “Alevora” for the season of rebirth and “Ombrulex” for closing the year with harvest. Each unit of time and date carries cultural importance, aligning Liran life with celestial events, especially the phases of their moon, Veil.
The city of Elion is host to many recurring events and festivities. Please name and describe these events. Include details about when each festival or even happens, its duration, its purpose, and which races participate.
One of the most significant celebrations is the "Veil Harmony Festival," which occurs during the full phase of Veil in the Briska of Alevora. This three-Solon long festivity honors the balance and unity among Lira's diverse races.
. . .
Yes, that was quite a lengthy prompt. However, information about the various races that inhabit the planet, Elion’s geography and climate, and Liran timekeeping are all relevant to the design of events and festivals. The AI generated four detailed and lengthy descriptions. Here’s a summary, along with some illustrations.
Please provide me with a brief summary of the events and festivals described.
The "Veil Harmony Festival" is a significant event celebrating unity among races during the full phase of Veil in Alevora. The three-Solon festival includes performances, dances, and a feast.

While we’re in the mood for partying and banquets, let’s turn our attention to restaurants and food. The following prompt includes our summary of districts in Elion, generated in the previous chapter. You’ll also note that this prompt presents another method for building detail into our districts – it asks the AI to come up with street names for each eatery.
Lira is a thriving, peaceful planet twice the size of Earth, with a single moon, Veil. It’s part of the Laniakea Supercluster and forms the Amity Ring with nearby habitable planets Zyre, Hela, and Tora, fostering trade and cultural exchanges.

Sylphine, from Sylpha, with their delicate wings and connection to the environment, serve as healers and musicians, fostering harmony and environmental care on Lira.
Lira is divided into several culturally and politically countries, each with their own governing bodies.
The Sonaris District is Elion’s northeastern beacon of innovation, buzzing with a vibrant atmosphere and home to the Crystal Spire. Keldrae Heights offers hilltop luxury and the esteemed Grand Observatory. The Tillian Quarter, with its classical architecture and prestigious schools, lines the Serene River’s south. The heart of Elion’s research, Vanei Axiom, boasts the Axiom Data Center amid its futuristic landscape. Echo Promenade livens up the northwest with shopping havens and a dynamic nightlife, while the Lyrandar Enclave promises serene luxury by the sea to the east. Lastly, Draysil Arch melds industrial prowess with cultural richness in the city’s industrious northeast.
Elion is predominantly inhabited by Humans and Yrinthi, with significant minorities of Sylphine and Vesperians intermingled throughout its diverse neighborhoods. The University of Sion boasts a substantial number of Glireans and Oraquill among its academic staff.
The city of Elion is host to many unique local restaurants and culinary experiences, influenced by its local inhabitants. Please describe some of these restaurants. Include their name, district, street and number, type of cuisine, and most popular dishes. Restaurant, dish, and street names should not contain any English words or terms whatsoever. Please write in prose.
My request to the AI to write in prose was to prevent it from generating a heavily formatted bullet-point list. Depending on the model and interface you’re using, you may not need that clause.
Time for some more Midjourney? Sure!
An exquisite epicurean experience can be found at Nefali's Repast, nestled within the heart of the Sonaris District on Zirene Avenue at building 935. This elegant eatery offers a fusion of Glirean tastes and traditional Liran flavors. The most lauded dish here is the Iziri Flare, a tantalizing mix of spicy root vegetables and savory stewed Frolindean meats. Patrons also rave about the Quomi Stir-Fry, a colorful array of sautéed Glirean vegetables served over a bed of fragrant Jiranthi grains.
Midjourney prompt: a mix of spicy vegetables and savory stewed meats; elegant offworld dining –ar 3:2 –style raw –v 6.0

Midjourney does food well. It’s probably seen a lot of Instagram in its training data.
In Keldrae Heights, perched on the summit at 1883 Halera Lane, resides the luxurious Vividuria. It specializes in the finest Nevithian cuisine. The restaurant's signature dish, the Silent Prowl Platter, features a delicate assortment of grilled Arrinth fish complemented by a side of stealthily sourced Zelphri herbs. Dessert enthusiasts frequently indulge in the sweet Mireli Puffs, a decadent treat infused with the lightest Nevi creams and dusted with powdered Valisian sugar.

Yes, with Midjourney 6.0 you can literally copy-paste the nonsensical descriptions the AI generates and get interesting results. It would be easy to make a bot that posted this stuff on Instagram, complete with hashtags.
The tapestry of Elion's culinary sphere would be incomplete without mentioning Ilyndrae's Hearth. Tucked away on 402 Quirith Quay in the industrious Draysil Arch district, this eatery specializes in robust Yrinthi flavors that mirror their hearty disposition. Gastronomes frequent Ilyndrae's for their fiery Yrithin Broth, a steaming cauldron of aromatic stock simmered with an array of mystery meats and hot, local tubers. Not to be overshadowed is the restaurant's beloved entree, the Deep-Bhar Roast—a succulent cut of prime Yrithin game slow-roasted to perfection with a side of pungent Draysil Grains. For those with a sweet tooth, Ilyndrae's Hearth serves the traditional Silra Pie, a deep-dish delight filled with sweet spiced Sira fruit and covered in a flaky, golden pastry that’s always at the top of the dessert menu.
Midjourney prompt: a succulent cut of prime Yrithin game slow-roasted to perfection with a side of pungent Draysil Grains. offworld street food on a table in an outdoor market –ar 3:2 –style raw –v 6.0

Midjourney 5.2 and 6.0 have a problem rendering cooked grains. They tend to come out a bit fluffy looking. I chose this image because the grains are blurred. I’m, however, not sure what’s in that dish in the background. Mini wieners, perhaps? Let’s not worry about that for now.
Note the difference in imagery between between using “fine dining” and “street food” in the prompt. Other styles such as “fast food”, “home food”, and “cafe food” also work.
Let’s explore etiquettes local to Elion. Use the same long prompt as the one above, but replace the final paragraph with this:
The city of Elion’s inhabitants follow a number of customary, local, everyday etiquettes influenced by the city’s racial and cultural demographics. Please name and describe some of these etiquettes. Names should not contain any English words or terms whatsoever. Please write in prose.
A central etiquette of Elion is Zanthera un'Veil, a gesture of greeting where individuals clasp their hands together and bow slightly, signifying equal respect among races. This custom originates from the Yrinthi but is widely adopted across the city's diverse population. It exemplifies the collaborative spirit of Elion's citizens.
Another customary practice is Lysira ce'Noram, which is the act of sharing a light meal or drink together when engaging in a new personal or business relationship. This social ritual echoes the Vesperians' historic love for community bonding and has become a treasured tradition during negotiations and meetings, not only celebrating a mutual understanding but also the fellowship of different cultures.
Kellu fen'Tirath is a tradition of mutual silence observed during the sunset, a peaceful formality often practiced in the serene Sonaris District. It is born from the Sylphine's deep-rooted reverie for nature's cycles and has become a quiet time of reflection for all of Elion's inhabitants. During Kellu fen'Tirath, people pause their activities to acknowledge the passing of day into night, symbolizing the closure of old grievances and the quiet anticipation of a new day.
Illyrion qe'Vada, literally translated as "the shared path," is an unwritten law of the roads and byways in Elion, ensuring organized and courteous travel through the bustling city lanes. Whether on foot, wing, or aided by the floating platforms common among Oraquill citizens, individuals follow signed cues and emit soft chimes if their path intersects with another’s, matching the Talcorian's architectural design for harmony and flow in urban planning.
Lastly, the practice of Neltharin sel'Cora, the exchange of small trinkets or tokens, reflects the Glirean way of communicating affection and camaraderie. It's customary to present these tokens during festivities or as a token of gratitude, irrespective of the recipient's race or position, thereby nurturing an atmosphere of mutual respect and friendship across Elion.
Similar prompts to the above could be used to generate specific etiquettes or customs, such as those associated with eating, business, entering a home, holidays, sneezing, and so on.
Let us now turn to religious sites in the city of Elion. In order to have the AI describe those sites, we must first define major religions for each of the city’s predominant races. We showed a prompt like this in the chapter on races.
Do the Yrinthi have any religions? If they do, please name and describe each one.
The Yrinthi do indeed have religions. Known for their deep historic and scholarly traditions, they have developed various beliefs over the centuries. Here are their main religions:
Xylyxism is an ancient Yrinthi religion focusing on the worship of nature spirits that they believe to inhabit all things on Yrinx. It teaches that balance with the environment is paramount to the prosperity of their race. Xylyxites often engage in rituals to honor these spirits and seek their guidance for a harmonious life.
The Sthrendu is a monotheistic religion that reveres a single deity known as Sthr, the Great Scale. Followers believe that Sthr created the Yrinthi and demands adherence to a set of guidelines known as the Scales of Order. The Sthrendu prioritize a structured society and are known for their methodical approach to life, cultural preservation, and legal systems.
Yrinthi also practice Scintillanism, a philosophy rather than a traditional religion, based on the continuous acquisition of knowledge and celebrating intellectual pursuit as the highest form of worship. Scintillanists operate many of the academies on Yrinx and partake in scholarly debates as a form of devotional activity.
Do the Sylphine have any religions? If they do, please name and describe each one.
The Sylphine, attuned to the subtle energies of their world, have a variety of spiritual practices and beliefs, some of which are as follows:
Aerism is a Sylphine belief system centered around the worship of the Winds of Sylpha, which are considered divine currents that govern the balance of the natural world. Adherents of Aerism practice wind-reading, a form of divination used to make decisions and guide their lives.
Harmonism is another Sylphine religion that advocates for the unity of all living beings and the interconnectedness of life. Followers of Harmonism express their faith through music and dance, considering these forms of art as expressions of the universal language that connects all creatures. They often hold communal gatherings where melodies and movement are shared and celebrated.
The Verdant Path is a pantheistic belief system where Sylphine revere the vitality and sanctity of their lush environment. They believe in the inherent spirituality of plants and trees and engage in nurturing practices, ensuring that the flora and fauna thrive alongside them. Devotees of the Verdant Path are known for their herbal knowledge and ecological rituals.
Do the Vesperians have any religions? If they do, please name and describe each one.
The Vesperians, radiating their inner light, are deeply spiritual and embrace several faiths:
Luminism is the primary Vesperian religion, which venerates light in all its forms. Followers practice meditation to cultivate their inner glow and illuminate wisdom and truth. Luminites gather in sacred Light Temples, where reflective ceremonies teach respect for knowledge and the enlightenment it brings.
Celestism centers on the celestial bodies that illuminate the Vesperian night sky. Celestists engage in stargazing and astral navigation, believing these practices link them to the cosmos and guide their life journeys. Temples dedicated to Celestism feature observatories where members can engage with the stars and celestial events, interpreting their significance and seeking guidance from the constellations above.
The Order of Illumination is a monastic group that focuses on the preservation and dissemination of ancient Vesperian texts and knowledge. They follow a strict code of living that includes ascetic practices, scholarly pursuits, and the sharing of enlightenment with other species through teaching and mentorship.
Please write a paragraph summarizing the religions described above.
The diverse species of Lira practice a variety of distinct and rich religious traditions. The Yrinthi worship through Xylyxism, honoring nature spirits and seeking balance with the environment, while the Sthrendu adhere to a monotheistic faith centered on a deity known as Sthr that emphasizes structure and order. Scintillanism, more philosophical in nature, celebrates intellectual pursuit as a form of devotional activity. The Sylphine's Aerism involves wind-reading to divine guidance, whereas Harmonism focuses on the interconnectedness of life expressed through music and dance. Their Verdant Path reveres the vitality of nature, with its followers deeply knowledgeable in herbal lore. The Vesperians' Luminism venerates light, with meditation and ceremonies that seek wisdom, and Celestism finds spirituality in the celestial bodies, using stargazing and astral navigation as tools for guidance. The Order of Illumination combines a monastic lifestyle with the custodianship of ancient wisdom, aiming to enlighten others through teaching. These diverse faiths reflect their respective cultures' values and relationships with their environments, emphasizing balance, order, unity, and enlightenment across the Lira system.
The above summary ensures that relevant information fits inside the language model’s context window. This is especially important for popular free models such as GPT-3.5, which have very short context windows. This constraint will, undoubtedly, change as time passes
Now that we’ve defined and summarized religions for the Yrinthi, Sylphine, and Vesperians, let’s use the following prompt, along with the above summary to create some religious sites.
The planet of Lira is divided into several culturally and politically different countries, each with their own governing bodies.
Elion is predominantly inhabited by Humans and Yrinthi, with significant minorities of Sylphine and Vesperians intermingled throughout its diverse neighborhoods. The University of Sion boasts a substantial number of Glireans and Oraquill among its academic staff.
Please list the most prominent races in Elion and then name and describe some of their most notable religious sites.
Humans and Yrinthi are the primary inhabitants of Elion, but the city's cosmopolitan nature is evident in the presence of the Sylphine and Vesperians, as well as a scholarly contingent of Glireans and Oraquill. Important religious and spiritual sites in Elion include:
The Cathedral of Luminous Harmony attracts adherents of various faiths but is predominantly a place where humans practice their diverse religions, reflecting Elion's multi-faceted belief systems. Its stained glass windows depict scenes from a multitude of traditions, casting a kaleidoscope of colors onto the marble floors at sunrise and sunset.

At this point, you’re probably getting the gist of this prompting scheme. Include a small amount of highly relevant information in the prompt and then ask for what you want. In this same manner, you can use a language model to tell you about museums, businesses, government buildings, amusement parks, public parks, and all the other landmarks associated with a city. I’ll leave those exercises for the reader.
In the next chapter, we’ll explore history and politics. Stay tuned!
